Bear Mountain is an absolutely beautiful hike. It’s about 6.7 miles long and crosses into the Appalachian Trail for a small section. The summit is 2,323ft high and offers nice views of the area. Also, a cool bonus about hiking bear mountain, it’s the tallest Mountain summit in CT! However, it is not the highest point as that’s on Mt. Frissell whose actual summit is located in Massachusetts.
At the summit of Bear Mountain, there are some remains of a stone building that was built in 1885 that stands about 8ft high. The remnants look more like a giant cairn than a building but it’s still pretty cool looking. On clear days you can see to the north, in Massachusetts, are Mt. Race (to the right) and Everett (to the left). To the west is Mt. Frissell and to the south-west is Mt. Gridley. Lastly, be on the lookout for blueberries along the trail!
Bear Mountain in Connecticut offers a delightful hike for pups. Starting from Route 41, the Undermountain Trail is our usual beginning point. At the split, we often opt for the scenic Paradise Lane Trail. This route offers an extended, gentle path abundant with watering spots, ensuring your pup remains hydrated throughout.
As you continue, you’ll meet the famed Appalachian Trail (A.T.). Turn left to head towards the summit. However, brace yourself, as this is where the terrain becomes a tad challenging. With its steep inclines, switchbacks, and rocky areas, it’s a section that requires a bit of caution. For our pups, it’s best to maintain a steady, gentle pace.
For those looking to bypass these rigorous parts, the Undermountain Trail offers an alternative. Simply continue until you reach the Riga Junction – you can’t miss its prominent sign. Here, take a right turn onto the A.T., which offers a less steep approach to the summit. Most dogs find this route more accommodating. After reaching the summit and soaking in the views, you can return the way you came, ensuring a comfortable trek for your pet.
