Beseck Mountain is a hidden gem located on the Mattabesett Trail in Middlefield, Connecticut. With a total elevation of 840 feet, this 3.7-mile out-and-back hike begins at the parking area on Route 66. Alternatively, you can park at Black Pond and access the Mattabesett Trail from there to reach the summit. While the initial section of the trail is a bit steep, it levels out along the ridge, offering stunning views of Black Pond below.
This hike is perfect for those looking for a shorter adventure with rewarding scenery. A bonus for sunset lovers: the summit faces west, making it an ideal spot to watch the day fade into evening.
Beseck Mountain is a great trail for pups of all skill levels. The gradual incline and relatively short length make it accessible for dogs who may not be accustomed to strenuous hikes. While the start of the trail is a bit steep, it quickly becomes easier as you reach the ridge.
The trail itself doesn’t have many water sources, so it’s important to bring plenty of water for your pup, especially during warmer months. However, Black Pond, located near the parking area, offers a fantastic spot for a post-hike swim—perfect for cooling off after your adventure.
I rarely see large crowds on this trail, making it a peaceful after-work hike for me and my dog, Java. Its tranquility, combined with the scenic views, makes it a favorite for both of us.
You can park at the Route 66 trailhead for the most direct access to Beseck Mountain, or at Black Pond for an alternate route via the Mattabesett Trail. Both parking areas are small, so arriving earlier in the day is recommended to secure a spot.
