Hammonasset Beach

Hammonasset Beach State Park – Madison, CT

Hommonasaset Beach is one of Connecticut’s largest beaches offering over 2 miles of access to the beach. It’s open from Memorial Day weekend through October 13th. Outside this timeframe you can still use the beach but there are no lifeguards on duty or no amenities are open.

Hiking with your pup at Hommonasset Beach

Hammonasset is probably my favorite Connecticut beach; It’s scenic, has a nice walking path, and isn’t too rocky! In season, you are not allowed to bring your pup here but, out of season, many people bring their pups! Just make sure to clean up properly after them. As dog owners, we know once someone complains about dog poop not being picked up, they will ban all dogs from entering forever. So, do everyone a favor and clean up after your pup so we can all continue to bring our pups everywhere!

Leashed dogs are welcome in picnic areas, ball fields, nature trails, and bike paths year-round. Dogs are only permitted on beaches from November 1 to the end of March. Visitors with pets are subject to fines.

History

Hammonasset Beach State Park opened on July 18, 1920, attracting over 75,000 visitors in its first season. During World War II the park was closed to the public and used as a U.S. Army reservation. Meigs Point functioned as an aircraft range, with planes flying over Clinton Harbor, firing at the range and then flying out over Long Island Sound. In 1955, a stone breakwater was built at the Meigs Point end of the park. Source
