Roaring brook falls is a short easy(ish) hike located in Cheshire, CT. There is a small parking lot at the end of Roaring Brook Road that leads you right into the start of the trail. There’s always plenty of parking spaces and I’ve never seen the hike too crowded.
I like to stay to the right of the falls (red trail) going up because the entire hike up you follow the waterfall straight up. It is a bit steep and after a lot of rain or snow, it can get a bit challenging. When you get to the top of the falls there are some nice views looking over the falls. Roaring Brook Falls does intersect with the Quinnipiac Trail (Blue Trail) at the summit which allows for some more options to add mileage. Otherwise, it’s only about a half-mile up to the summit.
To make this trail into a loop is a bit difficult as the other side of the waterfall does get steep and isn’t well marked. When you’re on the blue trail you will see a cutoff trail that follows the waterfall back down but you end up on an unmarked trail for about a quarter of a mile before you start to see blazes again. Also, the area is pretty overgrown so sometimes it doesn’t feel like an actual trail. If you end up getting lost you can always make your way back to the waterfall to get your bearings on your location.
I’ve seen lots of pups on this hike and it’s a very dog-friendly area. Be careful because the parking lot and the first .2 miles are very close to private property so be mindful of your pup’s whereabouts. Some sections are steep and it’s a lot of inclines so even though it’s only a half-mile to the summit, it can be a bit strenuous at times.
