In the south-west corner of Massachusetts are a small group of state parks known for their scenery and spectacular views. Located here is Bash Bish Falls park. Bash Bish falls is Massachusetts’ largest single drop waterfall. Cascading water from Bash Bish Brook tumbles through a series of gorges and a hemlock-hardwood ravine forest and then drops about 60 feet into a gorgeous pool below.
Bash Bish Falls has two parking lots, in two separate states, that are about a mile apart. One is in MA, the other is in NY. The NY parking lot is a bit longer of a walk but not as steep and the trail is wider. The MA park lot is a bit of a climb but a little shorter in distance (1 mile vs 1.5 miles).
Let’s start with the MA parking lot. At the very beginning, you will be guided by the “scenic view” sign. This leads you to some pretty awesome views overlooking Bash Bish gorge. After checking out the views, head back down to the parking lot and go all the way to the far end to get on the trail for the falls. The blue blaze leads you right down into the falls and it’s only about half a mile before you see the fall.
The NY parking lot is the parking area you will hit first if you’re driving East on Falls Rd. You’ll see signs for the parking area on your right side and there’s a pretty large lot with a trail map at the beginning of the trek. It’s about .7miles until you hit the MA parking area which is another .3 until you hit the actual falls. You can also take the connector trail back which is a bit steep and about 2 miles back but adds some distance and views to the trail. The Connector Trail is also way less crowded.
This is a dog-friendly hike but it gets very crowded in the summer with lots of children and families. It’s a very easy hike but the surrounding area has lots of trails so you can check out Bash Bish after doing some other hikes or bring the whole family along for an easy scenic hike.
