Mount Frissell is a very scenic dog-friendly hike. The trail is easy to follow and wasn’t too steep, the beginning is probably the hardest mile but not too bad in any section for the pups to traverse through. Also, a fun bonus to this hike is you’ll also hit the highest point in CT along the Mount Frissell Trail. The actual summit is in MA but leading up to the summit is higher than CT’s highest mountain, which is Bear Mountain!
The first time I did this hike we parked on East St. (2GXM+Q5 Salisbury, North East, CT) and just did an out and back hike. The summit of Mount Frissell is about 1.6 miles up from the parking area. This was a pretty easy hike and only took an hour to complete.
The second time hiking Mt. Frissell I made it into a loop by going up the Mt. Frissell trail again but coming back down the South Taconic Trail. This loop is nice (about 5.5 miles total) but the last half mile you have to walk on the road back to the car. Java didn’t have any issues on the trail as it wasn’t a very steep grade up.
Overall, summiting Mount Frissell was a very dog-friendly hike. The Climb up from East Street is a bit strenuous but there are no rock scrambles and Java had no issues ascending Mt. Frissell Trail. Every time I’ve hiked in the area there have been a plethora of pups on the trails as it’s a popular day hike for many.
