Carter Dome, a demanding summit to reach, presented us with a challenging yet rewarding hike in New Hampshire’s White Mountains. We began our adventure at the Glen Ellis Falls, taking the Wildcat Ridge Trail over the steep and relentless Wildcats. Upon reaching the summit of Wildcat A, we descended to Carter Lakes and the Carter Notch Hut, where we took a 15-minute break to rest and enjoy lunch.
Following our brief respite, we continued up the steep Carter-Moriah Trail for 1.2 miles until reaching Carter Dome’s summit. Though there were no views at the summit itself, we decided to hike over to Mt. Hight to enjoy the scenic vistas we had been craving all day.
Despite the demanding nature of the hike, Carter Dome proved to be dog-friendly. Java, our canine companion, didn’t struggle with any section of the Carter-Moriah Trail, which felt more like climbing stairs than tackling a technical ascent. We encountered several other dogs on the trail, all of whom seemed to be managing well. The Carter Dome Trail was also very accommodating for our four-legged friend, with Java effortlessly navigating the route.
Embark on the challenging yet gratifying hike up Carter Dome and take in the stunning views from nearby Mt. Hight. This dog-friendly adventure is perfect for experienced hikers seeking a test of endurance, surrounded by the natural beauty of New Hampshire’s White Mountains.
