Elevation: 4,610 feet
Middle Carter Mountain in New Hampshire’s White Mountains can be accessed via two different routes: the Imp Trail or the Nineteen Mile Brook Trail. The former is an easier 5-mile trail that leads directly to the summit, offering a gentle hike without any rock scrambles or particularly challenging sections. Alternatively, you can take the Nineteen Mile Brook Trail, which requires summiting South Carter before reaching Middle Carter.
The 1.3-mile trail connecting Middle and South Carter summits is relatively easy, with minimal elevation change. Although neither summit offers views, Middle Carter boasts more appealing scenery near its peak (toward the Imp Trail). The summit of Middle Carter is marked by a large cairn pile, but no sign.
For a more varied experience, consider hiking up the Imp Trail and descending via the Nineteen Mile Brook Trail, creating an 11-mile loop that includes both Middle Carter and South Carter. This option, though longer, adds diversity to your hike and makes the adventure even more enjoyable.
Middle Carter Mountain is an exceptionally dog-friendly hike. Our canine companion, Java, encountered no difficulties on any part of the hike, and he found ample water sources on both the Imp Trail and Nineteen Mile Brook Trail. Embark on this scenic and dog-friendly loop hike to experience the serene beauty of New Hampshire’s White Mountains.
