Our initial attempt to conquer Mount Madison involved taking the Valley Way to Watson Path. However, various factors made it challenging, and we ultimately decided to turn back. Watson Path was quite difficult, especially for dogs that need to be adept at jumping and bouldering due to the steepness.
On our second and successful attempt, we chose the Daniel Webster trail. This route was much more manageable for both us and our furry companions. Of course, it was still a challenging hike since it’s a 5k ft mountain, but the footing was more reliable than on the Watson Path.
We also decided to peak bag and include Mount Adams in our hike, adding about 1.5 miles (3 miles in total) to our journey. Incorporating Mount Adams made the hike longer and more strenuous, but if you’re only tackling Mount Madison, it would be a beautiful and relatively easier presidential summit to enjoy!
